Whether you're Cooking with Walnuts, looking for info on Health + Walnuts, or part of the Walnut Industry, you've come to the right place!    To the site of Shugin Leonid. He is an author of one of the most precious walnut tree in Ukraine (see his USSR Patents)  with lateral fruiting.

His hobby for dwarf walnuts began in the mid-1970s, when he planted the first nuts sent to him by farmer S. Kalmykov from Uzbekistan. This walnut breeder from Ukrainian  Kharkiv-City was able to successfully pollinate these walnuts with a local frost-resistant form. Already in the early 1990's people from all over the USSR purchased varietal seeds of runty, precocious walnut. Over more than 35 years of scrupulous work, he has brought out 20 varieties of such walnut.

His collection holds significant opportunities for obtaining germplasm with desirable traits such as improved cold hardiness, pest and disease resistance, stress tolerance, and palatability, which through breeding could lead to the development of productive cultivars adapted to a much wider geographic and climatic area.
The main advantages of the Shugin's variety are extremely precocious flowering, multiple flowering, fruits produced in clusters, and high-quality kernels. Within this collection, all are late blooming and capable of self-pollination. Majority of the forms are extremely precocious and are capable of blooming twice in one season. Seedlings from the fruits of his walnuts begin to bear fruit from 3-4 years.

Ukraine is 5th exporting country of walnut (2016)

Ukraine is 3rd exporting country of walnut (2018)

To the foreign investor, Ukraine is very attractive as an abundant area for growing walnuts on an industrial scale (up to 1 million tons per year). And this is for three reasons: favorable climate + suitable soil, cheap labor and cheap land rent. Іnvesting in a walnut garden is beneficial because of 8-10% growth (every year) of the price of wanut.  In 2019 more than 4 new runty fruitful varieties of walnut were registered in Ukraine. So, Ukrainian walnuts market will have fast development. Ukrainian walnuts products are undervalued cost yet. The fabulous walnut is a tasty treat for the home orchard owner or a potential future crop with Ukrainian’s climate meaning YOU can produce high quality nuts on Ukraine fertile soil (black earth, humus).
  1. Walnut gardens are included in industrial fruition since the 5th-6th year after planting.
  2. Shugin's walnut trees: observations show growers with 10 year old trees producing an average of 11-16 kg (depending on cultivar, area and care).
  3. Walnuts like a warm climate, with a high summer temperature and winter chilling (down to -10 -20 ºC).  Walnuts will grow in humid areas but there is more risk of disease.
  4. The most successful growing areas tend to be on the west, central and south of Ukraine. Importantly, walnuts need protection from the wind and to grow in a free-draining soil (down to 2m), as is access to irrigation. The central and southern regions of Ukraine require artificial irrigation for guaranteed high yield of walnuts. Since the last 12 years in Ukraine there has been a sharp change in climate, walnuts and hazelnuts begin to plant in the center and in the northern regions, and pistachios, figs, almonds and persimmons in the southern regions.
  5. Walnuts are self-pollinating but the more trees you have, the better the pollination rate. You can plant trees according to the schemes 5x7, 7x6, 6x6 metres (only walnut), or to the schemes 9x7 and 8x7 with such profitable berry crops as raspberry, blackberry or even dwarf pear which are planted in mid-rows.
  6. There are two classes of Juglans regia (English walnut) used for nut production. There are dwarf Shugin’s walnut (in height not more than 5-6 meters) with estimated fruiting potential = 50 years and medium-sized walnut (in height 7-10 meters). The first is non-grafted+cheaper and more adapted to weather disasters. The medium-sized walnut is grafted+more expensive and is more vulnerable to climate change. The estimated fruiting potential of last = 100 years.
If you have a fear about managing agriculture - not fear! There are many successful agricultural/tree farms, investors of which are Europeans, Americans, Chinese in Ukraine. They hire their assistants, managers and specialists in agricultural native workers from Ukraine.

PRICES:

As of 2015 and 2019, the price for walnut in Ukraine fluctuated between $ 4-5 (wholesale sales price) per 1 kg of peeled nuts. 1 kg of walnuts in shells is between 0,78 $ (immediately when harvesting, september) and 1,0 $ (winter/spring and after 6-9 months  after harvesting).

Ukraine walnut exports reach $100.8 million

NEWs:
On November 5 (2019), a seminar was held in Odessa on the possibilities of expanding the market of walnuts and hazelnuts. The consultation was conducted by expert Jim Fitzpatrick (ITC).
The number of walnut exporters may increase in 2019, agroinsider.com.ua reports. This is due to the fact that farmers gathered a record harvest of about 128,000 tons of walnuts over the 2018 year, and they are convinced that the current trend of growth will remain sustainable in 2019. Young walnut gardens, which were planted in Ukraine four to five years ago, have contributed to the record harvest.
